Plot Summary[]
A Tripod looms over a cave in which Will, Henry and Beanpole are trapped. Beanpole offers to cut the tracking device in Will's side and he accepts, though Henry is sickened by the idea and goes to explore the cave while Beanpole does the deed. As soon as the tracker is removed, the Tripod sends a tentacle to investigate the cave. The boys make a decoy person out of hay and attach the tracking device into it, then send it away on the horse they have. Fooled to belive that the decoy is Will, the Tripod follows it.
The boys leave the cave and are discovered by the Vichot family near their vineyard. Madame Vichot offers to help Will with his injured side, as well as a place to stay for the boys. In return, the boys help the family with collecting grapes. The idyll is shattered when a Black Guard by the name of Daniel appears, however.
